Hi, Can I use a normal vanila recipe for the teddy bear cake?

250 butter
250 flour
250 sugar
5 eggs

I’ve never tried it but I really think the sponge recipe you have would be too soft. You’d be better off using something a little sturdier like this http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/10860/easy-vanilla-cake. It’s not Madeira, the small amount of plain flour in the recipe makes it slightly denser which is better for carving. Lots of members have baked this recipe and have given good feed back. I use all Jane Hornby’s recipes, they’re always reliable. I expect you’ll receive more answers to help you decide.
