Love this project. However, did I miss seeing Paul glue the pillars to the boards that sit on top? With the cupcakes attached to the board with Royal Icing, when a guest takes a cupcake the tower shelf is liable to fall off.

Not quite sure that I understand fully what you mean. The pillars are stuck down onto the boards and placed so the top boards are perfectly balanced and will remain in position when cupcakes are taken off. I can see a problem with the royal icing sticking hard so yes I suppose an accident could take place. A little glycerine in the icing would keep it softer and just as efficient as a glue. x
