Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Lace template
Hi everyone
I am making a round wedding cake for my friend and she would like the lace from her dress duplicated in royal icing on the sides of the cake and the top outer edge of the cake up to the base of the next tier. How do I do this.
Many thanks

Hi Juix69
Making duplicated lace from royal icing takes a long time and is very delicate so many pieces have to be made to accommodate breakages. The only way I know how to copy lace in royal icing is to lay the fabric under a clear sheet of perspex and pipe the design in varying consistencies of icing. There would be a certain amount of flood work involved depending on how intricate the pattern is. It is tremendously time consuming as the lace doesn’t always lift off the surface cleanly thus breaking. Another way would be to actually make a template of the lace by drawing out the pattern on parchment paper. The paper is then attached to the very dried iced cake and the pattern carefully etched out using a pin. When the paper is removed the guide to follow would be the pin etching. If you google ‘Elaine McGregor Royal icing techniques’ you will be taken to youtube videos showing Elaine demonstrating royal icing lace and many other techniques. The easiest way by far is to make your own moulds from the actual lace. See the technique here http://www.makeyourownmolds.com/how-to-lace-mold
I hope I haven’t been the bearer of doom and gloom, I wish I could help more. x
