Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Basic tin sizes – what tins should I have?
I’m going to try a tier cake for the first time. Just for practice, nothing special. I am going to treat myself to new round cake tines for this and hope it will be a good investment. I am not sure what sizes to get, in the videos for teir cakes I can’t see what sizes the three tiers are. Can you also tell me the sizes for the square ones just in case I decide to try square instead if round tiers? Thanks Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth
Paul has used 10, 8 and 6 inch cakes for the tiered cake here http://www.cakeflix.com/stacking-cakes-stacking-a-3-tier-round-cake-2 Same with the square tins.
These are good sizes to begin with as they are the most commonly used. For larger or shaped pans, I feel it is more practical from a space saving aspect to hire them from cake decorating stores.
Paul uses the 8 and 10 inch tins most frequently for novelty cakes, the bigger cake sizes are listed in the ingredients or tools section below each tutorial. Some of the older tutorials have not been updated with the list but Paul always verbally states which size cake he is using for the project. You will see in the Teddy bear tutorial 8 x 10 inch tin is used but in subsequent tutorials for the same template Paul has used a 10 inch tin. It isn’t always necessary to own every single size when another can be adapted.
If you’re out on a cake tin spree it might also be worth looking at some of the Alan Silverwood pans particularly the multi square. Just google it to see. Hopes some of this info helps.
Hello =), may I ask, following up to the comment you left about the tins,
are the Alan Silverwood tins the ones Paul or some of his teaching staff would recommend?
I have a huge set from a different supplier and though they are okay I would like to invest in a nicer set.
So many out there to pick from. I value Paul and his other teaching members opinions and would be grateful for more information.
kind regards =)
Tammy
Hi tammy
Paul has recommended the Invicta brand. I believe so has Mrs Jones. These are very good professional tins and a little on the expensive side. Don’t let that put you off because they will last you for many years. Shop around as prices do vary quitely steeply.
Here is the Invica site http://www.invictabakeware.co.uk/celebration-cake-tins-5.html
Also google ‘Invicta cake tins’ to see many more suppliers.
Hope this helps.
