Cake Size Help

Hi i wonder if you can help me i am making my sons wedding cake and i not really sure of the sizes i should do, its a 4 tier stacked cake in the shape if a vintage bird cage with tthe top tier being domed. i was going to do 12″ 10″ 8″ and 6 ” but a cake decorating shop i went to for some advice on other things says it would be better 13″10″ 7″ and 4″ now i dont know what sizes to go for i spoke to my son and his girlfriend but they dont have a clue about cakes. i stacked the various sizes on top of each other but this hasnt really helped, the cake will have sugarpaste on and then the bars will be piped down each tier of the cake, the 3″ difference looks quite noticable but the 2″ looks more subtle what would you suggest?

Hi samwitch

Just wondered whether you have any wedding fayres near you where you could view actual cakes. It would give you a better feel seeing real tiers. Personally I feel the 2″ difference makes the bars looks more connected to the cage at the top. But if you want to place decorations and flowers on the clearance ledges, the 3″ difference may be better. It’s what you feel happiest with.
