Dowelling a tall tier

Hello, I wonder if anyone could help please. I’m making a wedding cake and the bottom tier is 6″ deep. Would I just dowel this as a single cake rather than putting a cake board in the middle of the tall tier? As it’s the bottom layer I’m worried that the whole weight of the rest of the cake would be resting on a cake board as opposed to the bottom drum? Thank you 🙂

Hi Caroline0211

I would definitely separate the two like Paul does in this tutorial

Depending on how many tiers you have aloft you may even want to drive the centre dowel through both tiers right down to the bottom board for extra security. If you want to do this it may be easier to drill a hole in the centre of the board before you assemble the two. Paul does have a lesson on this which I can’t find but when I do find it I’ll post.
Hope some of this info helps.
