How long do you suggest the 3 x 4″ square cake tins will need in the oven? I haven’t used such small cake tins before.

This will depend on which recipe you’ll be using. I would suggest since this is your first time using a small tin to stay with your bake until completion. Because all ovens are different it would be difficult to give you precise times. I normally babysit tin sizes which are new to me.
As a very approximate guide:
Sponge cake 35 – 45 minute
Maderia cake 45 – 60 minutes
Fruit cake approx 1hr – 1.5 hrs on 130 c fan assisted/ 150c conventional
This obviously depends on what temperature you’re baking, the times above are approximate and based on 140c fan assisted oven and 130c fan for the fruit cake. I can’t emphasise more to please keep and eye and nose on the baking throughout and jot it down once done for future baking.
