Using sugarpaste after storing for a couple of months

Has anyone had trouble with bringing sugarpaste back to a good consistency after storing it for a couple of months? I keep having issues with tearing and cracking!

Thanks!

Hi mycraconn

Sugarpaste which has been in contact with a lot of icing sugar can dry out, tear and crack after storing. I knead in a little trex to recondition it. Sometimes if the paste is really hard I place a very slightly damp tea towel over it to make it pliable and then re knead with a little trex. This is just to put a bit of moisture back into the paste and not to make it wet.
I expect other members can share their little tricks to get paste back into good shape.

Thanks!!!! i have tried adding trex and can get the paste soft but when i try to roll it out it seems to crack and tear!

Do you think i just need to work it a bit longer or is it the quality of the paste?

Kneading it will certainly warm it up and get it more pliable but it can also rob the moisture out. Knead in a bit more trex and see whether that helps. You could also knead in half a teaspoon of glycerine to help retain moisture.
I can’t say whether it is the quality of paste. I don’t know which brand or how much you’ve got there.
It is possible the sugar has begun to crystallise. How does it feel, is it gritty?

I will try a bit more trex next time – im just worried about altering the taste!

I was using Dr Oetker that time, i have been trying different brands but ive yet to find one i want to stick with!

It wasnt gritty, just didnt seem very stretchy and tore very easily.
