Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Novelty Cake
Hi
I am planning on making a Death Star Wars cake soon, and wonder where I can get the script for the words ‘STAR WARS’. Does anyone have any idea where I can source this please? Also I have two 8inch half sphere dummies for the spherical ship which I am going to ice and spray grey. I have never iced a sphere shape before. Do I apply the paste on each half then put them together? Or do I fix them together and then put the sugar paste on the whole sphere? The other thing I noticed, looking on google images is that there is a depression on the spherical cake. Given I am using dummies for the ship I can hardly cut out a depression in it so does anyone know if there Is such a thing as a circular edible hologram I could buy to effect the illusion of a depression on the sphere? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks. xx

Hello bellescakes
You can get some free down loadable fonts, just google ‘ free Star Wars fonts’.
Here’s one http://www.fonts2u.com/starwars.font but have a look at others too.
Once you have the font it can either be replicated by edible imaging or traced and painted with food colours/
To cover a sphere it’s best to stick the two halves together first before covering with sugarpaste.
Have a look here for more instructions http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/ball-shaped-cakes
There are lots of tutorials online on how to make the death star, to see them google ‘death star tutorial’
It’s not too difficult to make it out of styrofoam ball. Make a small sugarpaste ball and stick it down on the dummy ball with either water or edible glue. Flatten it down and then with the end of a small rolling pin make a hollow or depression as seen in the death star. Once done cover it with sugarpaste, redefine the depression and let it dry. Follow the same covering technique as for the ball cake. Hope this makes sense and helps. x
Hi Madeitwithlove
Thanks very much indeed for your help. I looked at the ‘free star wars fonts’ and they look great. I’m not sure how to use the words on edible imaging as I think these things only come on a round or square sheet. Is it possible to print it on a rectangle? Or when you say I can print it off, trace, and paint with edible food colouring
do you mean that I’d need to place the lettering on say flower paste and cut around them and then paint them? I can’t imagine I’d get the cut-outs to look really sharp. Also once sugar paste ball is on the dummy and then flattened a bit then whole ball iced, will it not look a bit saggy around the ball/depression bit? It’s just that I can’t imagine the finish.
Thanks again xx
Hi bellescakes
Once you have the font you can take it to a cake decorating shop who has an edible printer and they can make an the image for you on edible sheets. The cake decorating company does it all for you. All you have to do is phone them and give them your requirements. Here is their link:

If you want to do it at home, place the font under some parchment paper and trace the word with pencil quiet hard so the lettering shows through on the other side. Flip it over and go over the mirror image again quite hard, flip it over again so you can see the word right way up. Place the image on the cake or board and go over it again, use the veiner tool and try not to pierce through the parchment. This will leave an impression visable for you to paint in. If you do it this way your flower paster/sugarpaste would need to be dry so you can etch the letters. Pencil marks are fine to use on food so don’t worry about it getting on your sugarpaste. Raewyn does a similar thing on the new dragonfly tutorial here:

If you’re not confident with the ball of sugarpaste on the dummy ball, make a snake with a little paste, make it into an O and stick that on the dummy. When you cover it the O will leave an indent. Another way is to make an indent straight into the dummy with the end of your small rolling pin. Dummies are soft and dent quite quickly.
Sorry to take so long replying, I ‘ve had a migraine all day and can’t look at the monitor! x hope this helps.
Hi madeitwithlove
Sorry for taking so long to reply! Thanks very much for all your help. I took a look at how to ice a sphere cake and will hopefully manage it ok. Also I tried denting a dummy but didn’t get on too well as the depression was more square than round even though I used a small rolling pin. But I contacted dummies direct and they are doing a half sphere with a depression, I already have 2 at home but will find a use for the spare one. I found dummies direct extremely helpful and accommodating and would recommend highly them especially to anyone who would like a particular shape of dummy. Regarding the star wars font I did locate one and have copied and pasted it with a view to having it printed up on an edible transfer. I am hoping this will work out as once the wording gets stretched it can often lose focus I a told.xx
Hi bellescakes
I’m so pleased you have it sorted out. Dummies Direct are brilliant! see my blog here if you have already:

I don’t know why I didn’t suggest that in the first place! xx
