Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Chocolate Cake Recipe amount
Please is it possible to have Pauls recipe ingredients for each size cake tin, that most recipe books usually provide, I know I can use charts to adapt but I am
never confident I have the correct amount of ingredients and as I have not been successful yet in
a good result, if I had the recipe for example of a 6inch round I could experiment with confidence to achieve a good result without it being costly knowing I have the correct ingredient amounts.
I find the recipe for a 8inch and a 6inch cake made together confusing when he bakes the cake on video. I would so love to use Pauls recipe. Thankyou

Hello PearlMary
The whole of Paul’s recipe which he puts into two tins will go into one ten inch square tin. This makes it very easy to convert the recipe for other tin sizes. On this site you a ready reackoner and the cakeometre tools. They are both very easy to use and both extremely accurate so that you will not be wasting ingredients. To see them both take a peek here:
The instructions for the ready reckoner says to first to the tin sized used. For us that is 10″ square because the whole recipe fits into that size tin. Follow the instructions and you will see by how much you have to scale the recipe up or down. The cakeometre link will take you to the Cake Baker site where you will find their tool which again is a matter of filling in the ingredients list to get the amounts which you need.
If you take a look here you will see that I have converted the recipe for an 8″ square tin. This will also fit into a 9″ round.
If you look here you find the convertion for an 10 x 8 inch cake tin:
And for all the above information and a little bit more take a look here:
Hope this helps, if you need more information please post again.
Thankyou for your help, I just get confused when I try to convert the recipe down to a 6inch round in that the cake o meter comes up with 1.7 egg or 0.3 teaspoon of Bicarbonate i seem to get a bit lost.
If an amount for eggs or any other ingredient comes up anything above .5 round it up to the next highest number, so 1.7 eggs becomes 2 eggs. Anything under .5 round it down, for example 2.3 stays at 2.
The bicarbonate of soda in this instance came out as 0.3 teaspoon, in mls that is 1.5ml. If you don’t have such a tiny measure you can get away with using just slightly over a quarter of a teaspoon.
If you’re still having any difficulties with the conversion just post back. Hope this update helps. x
Thats really helpful, I will give it a go Thank you for your advice, thats made it much clearer for me.
