Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Fruit cake tin size
If I make the fruit cake from the tutorial page will the ingredients fill a tin that is 10″ x 8″ or should I increase the recipe?
Thanks in advance

Oh thank you so much! That’s a really helpful thing to know. I will use this from now on.
Hi mrsh1978
Mrs Jones’ fruit cake recipe from the tutorial page is for an 8″ round. To scale the recipe up for 10″ use the site’s cake recipe calculator here :
The recipe is already loaded on, use the down arrow for a drop down menu to see it then fill in the grid the size you require. If you have any problems just shout back. 🙂
Thank you madeitwithlove. This is probably a stupid question but my cake tin is rectangular and is 10″x 8″ so when choosing the diameter of the cake i’m scaling up to, do I choose the width as 8″ or 10″ please?
I see! the calculator only does square and round and you have rectangle tin. In that case you can use the ingredients for a 9″ square tin which is closest to the surface area of your tin.
This is how it works on surface area of both tins: 10 x 8 = 80, 9 x 9 = 81.
Hope this helps. Shout if you need more information.
You’re welcome mrsh1978. Happy baking, you’ve chosen a fab cake to bake. 🙂
