Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Cake topper advice
I have made a cake topper out of modelling paste, which consists of 3 curly bits that are spiraled. I will be painting them gold when they are dried. My question is < how would I stick them the top of my cake? As it will be hard, will it become soft and break at the base? They are about a cm width at the base of each piece, so cant put them in posy picks.

Hi Tomandhen123
The spirals can be supported on lollypop sticks or straws. Insert a stick/straw into the cake, thread a spiral over it. See how far down you would like the stick/straw to be on the spiral. Remove stick/straw and cut off to the required height before placing it back into the cake to hold the spiral. Obviously a little of the stick/straw will still be visable toward the bottom but that too could be painted with the same gold to disguise it. Hope this makes sense.
I’m not sure what you mean by thread a spiral over it? I have made the shapes by cutting strips of paste which are about 1 cm wide and 6 inches long. Then they are tapered to a point at the top which is coiled round slightly. The end bit which is 1 cm has to be inserted into the cake, then the tapered spiral bit sticks up. There are 3 of these. Its difficult to explain without seeing it.
How did you coil the strips of paste to curl them? did you wrap them around a pencil or a paint brush and then remove them to harden up? If you’ve got a link to show me the type of curls you’ve made it will be very helpful. The type of curls I mean is the same as Paul does with wire in the exploding parcel cake tutorial. He coils the wire around a paint brush. The same can be done with paste. By spiral I mean the paste which has been curled. Perhaps I haven’t understood properly.
EDIT
This is what I have understood that you have made: http://www.wilton.com/curlicues/WLTECH-29.html
If it is, the same dowels or pop sticks which they were made on can be used to support them upright once dry.
It’s hard to understand without seeing your project, but I have found that melted chocolate will hold just about anything in place once it solidifies.
