carousel cake with different theme
Hi Everyone,
This question is more about an Design idea.
I have been asked to make (by a very sweet little girl) carousel cake but with candy theme, I have made carousel cake with orignal Paul’s design and in Xmas theme but I am not able to imagine how to incorporate candy theme in it.
Any suggestions will be appreciated .

How about finding out what the little girl’s favourite candies are and use them as jewls to decorate the carousel? Are you still going to use the horses? If you are, how about incorporating basket paniers on the horses and stick candies in the baskets. I think home made candies and cookies, different shapes and patterns eg candy floss, icecream, sea shells, favourite toys. You’d have to make small things which can easily be introduced into the carousel design. Most of these can be made in moulds and just stuck on. I think Paul has already loaded the design so you have to do is adapt it.

Yes,I was thinking almost same. I have few ideas in mind but its very difficult for me to just imagine and start working without knowing how it will turn out. Carousel cake is a big structure so I had to discuss here before start working on it.
I was thinking using
1.a pie with cherry on top for the topmost conical part of carousel, or I can use a bowl fill with icecream scoop for top.
2.Stick Macarons on the pillar,
3.drippy cake design for the 10 inch bottom and
4. decorate 12 inch bottom part with donuts, cupcakes and icecream cones.
5. A mini gumball machine on board.
Also I amnot sure how to make candy floss with fondant or sugar
I just wonder will it look TOO MUCH going on cake and will it look messy or just a Candy land.
Some of your ideas sound very good Neha. If you can’t envisage how it will come together, try making a drawing of it. If you don’t want to do the candy floss, it won’t matter, this was just another suggestion. I would sub the macarons for stripey piped meringue pods with different filllings. Did you have a look at the pinterest link? search Willy Wonka cakes for more ideas. I think it would look great with all different elements. Make it more interesting by hiding some of the elements for the child/ children to find in amongst the rest of the candy.
I’m not really sure how much you want to put on the cake. If you don’t want it to look like candy land, only add what you feel is appropriate.

I am about to complete this carousel cake with candy theme. Just one question.
I have made the top of carousel 6 inches instead of 10 inches so that I can put a pie top on that.
SinceI have to give it a swirly look , i cant use cake box paper (like Paul used). I have a giant cupcake pan and I was wondering whether it will be feasible if I will try to cover the top part of Giant cupcake pan with gumpaste and let it dry for a day and it holds the shape.
Or can you suggest something else.

I’m trying to visualise your idea and feel that it would work providing it is light enough so it can be supported. Are you saying that you will make a mould of the swirly bit of the pan with gumpaste and use that for the top of the carousel? If this is what you mean, you will need more than a day to let it dry through properly. Please could you let me know if I’ve understood your question. x

Yes you are right. I am thinking of making a mold of swirl top of giant cup cake pan with gumpaste. Then use it on top of carousel.
Ok, I think that would work. Try rolling the paste out quite thin so it dries quickly. However, it will be quite fragile, take care how much weight you place on it from other decorations. Make more than one in case you have breakage. I’ll have a search around for other methods, prefereably edible. I’m sure I saw something using flexique and wafer paper. How quickly do you want to do this?

I’ve been searching for another tutorial which uses flexique. It was something I was shown at the cake show. The woman demonstrating said it was on their website but it doesn’t appear to be there. She made a mould using the flexique on wafer paper which was layered over an egg like papier mache. Left to dry, it formed a light weight replica of the egg. I wish I could remember how it was done. I can’t find anything else. Don’t forget to use some cornstarch on the pan to prevent the gumpaste sticking to it. x
