cake height

Hi, a friend has asked me to made a football pitch cake for an adults birthday. I’m using cake pans that are 3/4″ in height (L 15X W 10). I’m adding a jam and buttercream filling and fondant top. There aren’t any toppers that will create height. So my question really is, are two layers of sponge sufficient or do i need to make a third? I’d appreciate your help.

thanks

Hi Lmcg

I think by today’s standards, most people would use three layers. It will be pretty deep by the time it is filled, crumbcoated and iced . I normally use two layers for sheet cakes which I find is more than suffcient. I think it really depends on the kind of look you want. I’ve watched some youtube videos for football pitch cakes, some look deeper than others so I guess it depends on your friend’s preference to how much cake she wants to serve. 🙂

If you need help with scaling up up any recipes, don’t forget the online calculators:

… and recently upgraded buttercream charts to include sinlge layer fills going right up to sheet cakes:

How much buttercream do you need to cover a cake?
