Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Ganache on dummy cake
Hi do I have to ganache a shaped (carved) dummy cake to get it smooth or can I place fondant straight onto it? I ask this as making a dummy shaped cake for show purposes only.

Hi claireads
Dummy cakes are not completely smooth, they have pits and dings which can show through icing. It really pays to cover them first either with ganache or a thin coat of fondant for a really professional finish. A cheap chocolate will do for ganache or an inexpensive brand of icing. It’s also possible to make your own fondant, for recipe take a peek here: https://www.cakeflix.com/questions/how-to-make-sugarpaste-from-scratch
Hope this helps 🙂
