Fish and Chip Cake: Cake International judge makes a giant supper!

Fish, Chip and Cake?

Although on first glance, this may look like a fish and chip supper suitable to feed a battalion. It is, in fact, the latest creation from ex-soldier and now Cake International judge Glen Beardsmore.

Made with over 300 eggs, this gigantic cake was made to celebrate the 60th birthday of a chip shop chain owner in Glen’s hometown of Birmingham.

Glen is no stranger to creating massive designs. In the past, the sugarcraft master has created a 3 foot ‘Back to the Future’ DeLorean car, as well as a life-size version of himself in his old marine uniform.

Speaking of his creation, Glen told the Birmingham Mail:

“I wanted to do something that was pertinent to them and had the wow factor,”

“It’s big enough to serve 250 people and is sitting on a board that’s 2ft by 3ft – the largest size I’m able to deliver.

“The fish is made from vanilla sponge filled with raspberry jam and iced, the chips are made from cookie dough and colour tinted to give them a crispy look and the peas are made from sugar paste.”

It contains 300 eggs and took three and a half days to make.

“The board is also covered in sugar paste to make it look like a slate that’s used to serve food in restaurants and pubs.

“The whole thing is edible.”

Glen worked as a Royal Marine Engineer for nearly a decade, working his way up to the rank of Signals Corporal.

In 1998 Glen left to become a HGV driver but found his calling in cake after being made redundant in 2013. This is when he decide to try something new…

“I’d always dabbled, making birthday cakes for my wife but never for customers,” said Glen, who runs Nice and Iced cake Co Ltd from his home in Birmingham.

“But then I went to the Cake International show in Manchester and thought maybe I could do this.

“I entered a cake into the show when it came to Birmingham NEC and won gold and came third in my category! I was amazed, I’d never expected to get anything let along third in my category.

“It was quite an achievement, and a big jump from being a lorry driver !”
