Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Safety for wires.
Hi there, I was wondering if someone could help. I’ve made a elephant for baby shower cake and they want it holding some balloons with wire but….. my problem is I can’t buy a flower pick small enough for the trunk. Is the elephant safe to eat apart from the trunk or will it contaminate the whole elephant?
Or if you have an alternative method to achieve this, it would be much appreciated.
Thankyou for your time. Xx

Hi Skemmy
You could use a thin straw filled with melted chocolate and allow the wires to set in that before inserting into the trunk. The straw can also be filled with royal icing or packed with thin rolls of gumpaste/fondant and allowed to set similarly.
Alternatively use edible safety seal: https://www.thecakedecoratingcompany.co.uk/tools-equipment-c28/cake-decorating-baking-tools-c63/ingenious-edibles-safety-seal-120g-p8962
Please be aware that this product contains palm oil.
Another way is to wrap the wires in several layers of cling film.
Personally, I don’t think the wires in trunk would contaminate the rest of the elephant. However, food safety should always be paramount and it is best practice to contain the wires in some form of covering.
Hope suggestions helps. 🙂
