Airbrush or edible lustre for Quotes on cake

Airbrush or edible lustre for Quotes on cake

I have an 8” round sponge cake I need to decorate. The sugarpaste on the cake has to be gold coloured, I will either use my airbrush using gold edible paint or I have a gold edible lustre spray can, what do you think will be best to use?
On the side of this cake there will be four “quotes”, I’m wondering what will be the best way to do this as I’m conscious the letters which I have already cut out using very small tappit cutters will have to be evenly spaced out and straight around the cake. Any suggestions on how to achieve this would be welcome.
Thank you
Karyn

Hi Karyn

Colouring the cake gold might be better done using the airbrush if you are confident doing it. It will save a lot of time and give an even finish. Lustre spray sometimes doesn’t give enough depth of colour and may require several coats before the desired effect is achieved.

For the quotes, measure the circumference of the cake then draw a line of that length on a piece of paper. Lay the letters out along that strip of paper. Once the letters are placed on the paper, measure the length of each word then mark the distances of each word around the cake using a ruler and dresden tool or even a pencil. Alternatively, if you don’t want to keep moving the letters around, you could draw out the letters to scale on the paper along the line then measure out as before.

Hope this makes sense. Please let me know if it does 🙂
