Asked to make square cake however would like a heart shaped outline on top made with cake for anniversary what is the best way to do this I will be added xtra cake onto square cake before I ice it to give it a pillow effect if that makes sense

When you say a heart shaped outline do you mean a cake or just an impression of a heart?

If it is a cake, you could make a heart shaped cushion to sit in a tilted fashion on top of the square cake. You’d need to have it sitting on its on card and placed on the dowelled square cushion.

If it just like an impression under the sugarpaste of the square cake, you could do a heart bas relief.

To make the bas relief, crumble enough cake and mix it with melted chocolate until it can be shaped into the outline of a heart on top on the square cake. Once the outline sets, it can be covered at the same time as the square cake to create the heart impression.
