Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Edible dust
Hi How would I go about applying the dusts to the textured buttercream please I have bought Paul’s dusts should the buttercream be cold , all the cakes at present are ivory so I will have to apply a lot of dust
Or would I be better mixing some small amounts of buttercream and applying to cake to get the textured bark effect Regards Alice

Hi Alice
Paul has a tutorial on how to use his new petal dusts and lustre dusts. See the tutorial here:
Buttercream cakes can be painted. The cake should be very cold to achieve a good painting cover. Make the dusts with either some alcohol or melted cocoa butter and layer the paints to achieve the bark effect.
You could also colour up small batches of buttercream, layer them on and scrape off to reveal the effect.
On the Cakeflix site , there are several bark effect cakes using different techniques. Just search for bark effect or log cakes to see them.
There was a free tutorial on the blog section for a silver birch cake. I can’t seem to get that up as I have limited signal in my phone. You might have better luck. There are also lots of bark effect tutorials on YouTube and online.
Hope suggestions help. My apologies for this late reply. We’re on holiday in an area almost devoid of internet. Good luck with your cake. ?
