Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Smarties cake
Hi, I am planning to bake a number 5 cake for my granddaughter’s birthday. She would like the cake covered with buttercream and then chocolate biscuit fingers around the edges and smarties on the top. When would you recommend putting the fingers and smarties on as I don’t want them to go soft or the colours to run? If I buttercreamed the cake the day before the party, and applied the biscuits and smarties on the morning of the party, would they still stick to the cake or would the buttercream be too dry?

Hi Katetomkinson
The chocolate fingers will be fine to stick on the day you buttercream the cake. There’s a chance the Smarties might bleed if you put them on soft buttercream. I would let the buttercream crust over a little before sticking them on. As it’s a buttercream covered cake, it can be refrigerated in its box and taken out a few hours before serving. 🙂
Thank you for your advice, much appreciated 😀
