History of Donuts which preceded the Giant Donut Cake Tutorial
Donuts, a beloved treat enjoyed by people worldwide, have a rich and fascinating history.
The earliest known donut-like pastries date back to ancient Greece, where they were known as “teganites” and were fried in olive oil and often flavored with honey, nuts, or sesame seeds.
In the 16th century, Dutch settlers brought their olykoeks, or “oil cakes,” to America. These were simple dough balls fried in lard and sprinkled with sugar.
During the 19th century, donuts became increasingly popular in the United States. In 1847, Hanson Gregory, a sea captain, is credited with creating the first donut with a hole in the middle. The hole was said to allow the donuts to cook more evenly.
In the early 20th century, donut shops began to pop up all over the country. One of the most famous donut shops, Krispy Kreme, was founded in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Today, donuts come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors. They are enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures.
