Background of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14th, has a rich and fascinating history dating back to ancient Rome. The origins of the holiday can be traced back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was held in mid-February to celebrate the coming of spring and fertility. During Lupercalia, young men would draw the names of young women from a box and would be paired with them for the duration of the festival.

Over time, Lupercalia evolved into a more romantic holiday, and by the Middle Ages, it was commonly associated with the exchange of love letters and gifts between couples. The tradition of sending Valentine’s Day cards originated in the 15th century, and by the 19th century, Valentine’s Day had become a widely celebrated holiday across Europe and North America.

The modern celebration of Valentine’s Day typically involves the exchange of cards, flowers, chocolates, and other gifts between loved ones. It is also a popular day for couples to get engaged or married.
