Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Bubbling fondant
I made a cake for someone and then next morning when I looked the fondant had started bubbling and cracked which was aweful.
Has this ever happened to anyone?
Also on one of my other cakes I put an edible picture and the same happened where it started bubbling and looked terrible.

Hi kookieskakery
How did you crumb coat your cake? If you used buttercream was it a stiffer mix than you would make for
filling? Sometimes if the crumb coat BC is not stiff enough it will not set up and be stable, causing the fondant
to bulge and fill up with air bubbles. Any air bubbles trapped under the fondant will also puff up, dry and crack.
These factors may be what caused your cake to bubble and crack. Your edible picture may
have been affect by moisture in your fondant. The sheets which edible pictures are printed on
are either sugar or rice paper and will attract moisture thus spoiling the image. It’s important to
have the correct consistency of crumb coat and also to disperse any air bubbles under the fondant
by pricking the icing then smoothing it out;
