Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Vegetable Shortening
How does vegetable Shortening look like? Is it same as vegetable fat spread for baking?
Most supper markets do not seem to stock Vegetable Shortening.
Many thanks,
Anthonia.

Hi Anthonia,
You should look for LARD it is a hard white fat that does not melt at room
temperature. Spread for baking is usually yellow in colour. Try to look for
a brand name called Trex. The yellow ones will not work if you are going
To use it for flower paste or Mexican paste. If it is for using as an
Ingredient in your cakes then the yellow ones are okay. I hope this helps.

Hi Anthonia
Look for the name Trex, that is vegetable shortening. You will find it in the same place
as margarines. Margarines are vegetable spreads but they are not the same as the shortening
you need for fondant and gum paste. Trex is white, looks like lard (which is animal fat), but is vegetable
fat. If you’re not sure, ask a member of staff in the supermarket. Ask for it by name ‘Trex’.
