gumpaste

Hi, i’m relatively new to cake making and have been asked to make an orb shaped cake with a ring round it like Saturn. I tried to make the ring with fondant but after leaving it to dry , i picked it up it fell apart! Is there something else i should be using, i was reading about gumpaste as it dries harder but reviews are that it doesn’t taste too good. All advice is welcomed.

Hi algers

Gum paste doesn’t taste very good but then most people wouldn’t eat it because it’s hard and brittle. It is strong and will make the ring for your orb. There are a couple of recipes for this medium, just put gum paste in the search box and you’ll see them.
How are to going to attach the ring to the orb? There are other options besides gum paste which may also work. Rice krispy treats,( recipes under the popular questions heading), pastillage, which is strong, and also Mexican paste. If you don’t want an edible ring, you could even make it out from craft card covered in fondant and just use it as a prop. or a cake drum with the centre cut out then iced. Just a few ideas.
