Having iced a cake with sugarpaste can you put your decorations straight on?

I usually wait for the icing to dry overnight (less chance of it getting damaged) and then use a little royal icing to secure the decoration on with. It’s personal choice, some people prefer to put them on straight away because while the icing is still soft, boiled water can be used to make it tacky to attach the ornaments.
