Cake board needed for stacking my cakes??

Hi all,

Im going to be making a two tier hexagonal princess castle shortly and im going to to have addtional turrets etc on the top tier.

I have dowels for support, but Im thinking i probably should have the smaller tier on a thin board as well..would this be the best idea??

Im just concerned that when they remove the top tier, the icing on the bottom tier will be pulled off as well, so any advice would be gratefully received 🙂

Hi mummykare

Which icing are you using to secure the top tier to the bottom? I made a three tier princess castle also with addition turretts and secured each stacked cake with ganache. I used a hot pallett knife to remove each cake. The ganache melts and it’s easier than struggling with royal icing which sometimes does tear the fondant on the bottom tiers. I boxed the doweled cakes up individually, took all the turrets separately, used the ganache for stacking the cakes and securing all the elements. It took ten minutes tops to assemble everything which also included the Merida model and unicorn. Using an extra board won’t eliminate the problem of sticking because all the boards have to be secured with royal icing or ganache to stop them moving. I hope my answer helps.

Thanks for that, hadnt thought of using ganache, ive normally stuck with either edible glue or royal icing.
I was just worried that with everything on the cake, dowels on their own wouldnt be strong enough to stop things sinking…dont want an upset 5 year old!

Hi mummykare

If you’re still a bit unsure have a look at any of the tutorials which stack cakes eg wedding cakes section. And NO, you certainly don’t want upset a five year old princess/prince!

Hi mummykare, were you asking if you had to use a cake card under the top tier at all, in which case you definitely do otherwise both cakes could just slide down the dowels!
