History of Poppy and Cosmos Flowers
Poppies
The poppy is a genus of flowering plants in the family Papaveraceae. The genus Papaver includes about 120 species of poppies, which are native to Europe, Asia, and North America. Poppies have been cultivated for their beauty and medicinal properties for centuries. The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) is the source of opium and its derivatives, such as morphine and codeine. Opium has been used for centuries as a painkiller and sedative. However, opium and its derivatives are also addictive and can be dangerous if abused.
In addition to the opium poppy, there are many other species of poppies that are grown for their ornamental value. The most popular of these is the Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale), which is known for its large, showy flowers in a variety of colors. Other popular species of poppies include the Iceland poppy (Papaver nudicaule), the California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), and the Shirley poppy (Papaver rhoeas).
Poppies are also a popular symbol of remembrance for soldiers who have died in war. The red poppy is particularly associated with the First World War, and is often worn on Remembrance Day (November 11) to commemorate the lives of those who were lost.
Cosmos
Cosmos is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. The genus Cosmos includes about 25 species of cosmos, which are native to Mexico and Central America. Cosmos were introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers in the 16th century, and they quickly became popular garden flowers. Cosmos are easy to grow and bloom profusely, and they are also a popular choice for cut flowers.
The most common species of cosmos is the garden cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus), which is known for its tall, slender stems and large, daisy-like flowers. Cosmos flowers come in a wide range of colors, including pink, purple, red, orange, yellow, and white. Cosmos are also a popular choice for attracting pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.
Cosmos are a beautiful and easy-to-grow addition to any garden. They are a popular choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners alike.
