Highlights
Here, we’ve carefully selected the key parts from the entire tutorial and condensed it into a 5 min long video. More than enough to get you started without taking up too much of your time.
1. Ganaching and Carving
Paul starts us off by layering the cake and preparing it for being carved so be generous with your ganache when layering it. Once the ganache has set it’s time to carve the cake to shape and then cover in ganache in preparation for covering it all in sugarpaste.
2. Covering and painting the board
Paul now covers the board in white sugarpaste and textures it with one of Karen Davies moulds which is noted in the tools section. Then it’s on with the edible dusts to add some more interest.
3. Making the legs and the jumper
Here, Paul shows us how to make the stripey legs by rolling out large sausages of sugarpaste and then demonstrates a clever way to create the stripes as though it is all one piece of material. Then it’s onto adding the neck and the jumper which will show under the jacket.
4. Making the jacket
Paul shows us a clever way to make a tailored jacket for your cake. It takes away the guesswork but as you will know with cake decorating, it doesn’t always go to plan!
5. Adding the arms/ finishing the jacket
In this lesson paul shows us how to create the simple arms complete with cute little mittens. Paul then adds the little bits of flashes and buttons to the jacket to finish it off.
6. Adding the shoes
Here, Paul adds the little baby shoes complete with cute little bows.
7. Carving the head/ Making the face
Here, Paul carves the head to shape from a polystyrene dummy. Paul uses a serrated knife but you could treat yourself to a hot wire foam cutter to save you all the mess. Paul has already covered the head in white sugarpaste and now shows us how to form the facial features and then adds the head to the body.
8. Adding the head to the cake
Paul starts by adding a cute little tongue and then show us how to secure the head to the cake.
9. Making the hat
In this lesson Paul shows us how to make the babies cosy little wooly hat using another of Karen Davies moulds.
10. Finishing touches
Paul finishes off the cake by bringing the babies face to life with a little bit of edible dust and glaze.
11. Other ideas
Paul shares some other ideas you can try out during this project. We’re sure you’ve some of your own, and we’d love to see what brilliant alterations you’ve made.
