Highlights
Highlights from the course.
1. Preparing the stand
This cake requires a straightforward structure, but the messy bit is carving down the cake dummy to get the shark’s base shape. If you want to make the whole design from cake see the PUFFER FISH tutorial.
2. Carving the cake
Paul now makes the cake food safe then spends some time carving the cake to get the rugby ball style shape. Once achieved he covers the whole cake and dummy in ganache before leaving to set in the fridge.
3. Covering the cake
First, Paul creates the outline of the shark’s mouth then covers the whole cake. He then shapes the shark’s fins, adding a little Tylo powder to help them set firm.
4. Adding the tail fin
Paul comes up with a cool way to get the distinctive tail fin by cutting out a piece of cake card, neatly covering, then adding to the cake. Use the Template available in the tab below.
5. Airbrushing
Now time to let the magic happen as Paul gets out the airbrush. After adding a lighter underside of the shark, on top he gives it that distinctive fearful colouring.
6. Covering the board and adding the eyes
Using different shades of blue and mixing in some white, Paul creates a very ocean like marble effect, perfect for covering the board. He then adds the eyes to bring our little cartoon shark to life.
7. Adding the teeth
Using a very straightforward technique Paul now cuts out then adds the teeth to give the finishing feature to our cartoon shark.
8. Other ideas
Paul shares with us some other ideas for this type of cake design.
9. Pro lesson
Everything a Professional cake decorator needs to know about a design like this.
