5. Carving and covering the cab

This is a long lesson, but hugely important to get the shape of the cab just right. If this looks wrong, then the rest of the cake will look out of sorts.

6. Making the wheels

There are 18 wheels to make in slightly different styles. Again, another long process, but certainly worth the effort to get the detail correct.

7. Covering the cab

Make sure to get the correct colour tone then its time to cover the cab. More patience required here to make sure that its covered as neatly as you can manage.

8. Adding details to the cab

The cab really starts to come to life as the grill and other features get added. Again, its all about the detail.

9. Adding logos to the cab

Every truck is defined by its logos. Paul works with a mix of sugarpaste, wafer paper and when all else fails, he used real paper (being sure to tell the bride and groom).

10. Decorating the base of the trailer

Another time consuming, but important task. It is all those little details that add up to the overall impact of the design.

To finish Paul decorates the top of the trailer and makes his final tweaks.

Paul discusses pricing, for what will be a very niche design.

HGV Truck Cake Tutorial

When you get asked to make an HGV truck cake, where do you start! Paul was given that very challenge for Sam and Charlie’s wedding cake, a wedding that he was attending so no pressure there then! As Paul mentions during commentary its all about getting the sizes to scale and trust the process. This took 4 days to make, but it was worth it as the cake was thoroughly enjoyed, especially by Sam who’s the proud driver of this monster truck. Don’t be daunted, give it a go and let Paul guide you every step of the way. As you’ll see from the images, Paul later adds the Top Table to complete the wedding theme.

In the following tutorial, you will learn how to…

  • Scale up a model truck
  • Build a wooden internal structure
  • Carve the shape of a truck cab then ganache and cover in sugarpaste
  • Hand mould wheels, lights safety rig etc to suit the scale of your design
  • and lots, lots more

HGV Trucks

HGV trucks, also known as heavy goods vehicles or lorries, are large commercial vehicles used to transport goods and materials. They are typically classified by their weight and axle configuration.

Types of HGV Trucks

  • Class 7: These are the largest and heaviest HGV trucks, with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of over 33,000 pounds. They are typically used to transport heavy loads such as construction equipment and machinery.
  • Class 8: Class 8 HGV trucks have a GVW of over 33,000 pounds and are also used to transport heavy loads. However, they are typically smaller than Class 7 trucks and have fewer axles.
  • Class 6: Class 6 HGV trucks have a GVW of 26,001 to 33,000 pounds. They are often used to transport medium-weight loads such as furniture and appliances.
  • Class 5: Class 5 HGV trucks have a GVW of 16,001 to 26,000 pounds. They are often used to transport light loads such as food and beverages.

HGV Truck Safety

HGV trucks are large and heavy vehicles, so it is important to operate them safely. Some safety tips for HGV truck drivers include:

  • Be aware of your surroundings: Always be aware of other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
  • Obey the speed limit: HGV trucks are not as maneuverable as smaller vehicles, so it is important to obey the speed limit and avoid sudden stops.
  • Use your mirrors: Use your mirrors to check for traffic before changing lanes or merging.
  • Signal your intentions: Always signal your intentions before changing lanes, merging, or turning.
  • Avoid distractions: Avoid distractions such as talking on the phone or texting while driving.

Take breaks: Take breaks every few hours to avoid fatigue.
