Highlights
Highlights from Ben Cullen’s punk rocker cake.
1. Creating the stand and making food safe
Ben talks through how to create the stand then makes it food safe before starting to add the cake.
NOTE: The head base sits 8″ up from the board.
2. Adding the cake
This design takes a lot of cake and it’s important that you get the stacking right. Watch Ben take the cakes, cut, ganache and stack them ignoring any finesse, which will come later.
3. Carving the shape
This is time consuming and can be intricate but it’s so important to take your time carving off small pieces at a time. Ben talks you through the process with some great advice about how to ensure the key features are clearly shaped and showing.
As it’s very hot during filming so Ben then covers the cake with a layer of chocolate, but ganache will do if you are in a cool studio.
4. Smoothing the cake
Whether you have used chocolate or ganache you’ll need to smooth the cake. Ben uses a knife to remove the sharp chocolate edges then uses his trusted steamer to get a smooth finish before covering the body with a thin layer of sugarpaste.
5. Adding the facial structure
This is where the face starts to take shape by adding the protruding features. Ben moulds the pieces into the shapes to give skull definition. Remember this will all be covered later so it doesn’t need to be too neat at this stage.
6. Covering the face
Now that the features are in place it’s time to cover the head, being careful to massage the sugarpaste to show the key features. It’s certainly worth taking your time at this stage to get all the details that Ben adds as they will all come to life when the airbrushing starts.
7. Adding the ears
No head is complete without adding the ears so watch how Ben shapes then adds the ears. Next it’s time for airbrushing!
8. Airbrushing
Ben starts with getting skin tone base layers added. The key thing here is to have the patience to build the layers slowly and don’t look to go for an all over covering.
9. Adding the eyes, teeth and tongue
This design is all about the detail and in this lesson Ben adds the key facial features. Watch how he creates a very realistic tongue and set of teeth using simple techniques.
10. Creating the Mohican
No punk is complete without a Mohican. Ben creates and texturises ten funky spikes which will become the very distinctive Mohican.
11. Painting the mouth and eyes
Using Spectrum flow airbrush colours Ben really brings the Punk Rocker to life by patiently building up the colours to achieve amazing results. You don’t have to be an artist, just follow Ben’s instructions and you’ll be amazed at the results.
12. Finishing painting the features
This cake is all about the detail and in this Lesson Ben adds the shadows and tones giving depth to the facial features, before finishing off by adding the Punk’s traditional Union Jack t-shirt.
13. Adding the jewellery and shadowing the hair
No Punk Rocker is complete without piercing and who better to add them than Ben! Our Punk Rocker is decorated with lots of piercing showing different skills and techniques to get these amazing results.
14. Adding the jacket
Time to give him the traditional Punk Rocker’s leather jacket. Ben shows how to create that well worn look and adds those all important little extras.
15. Airbrushing the jacket
Airbrushing those dark shades on the jacket really brings our Punk Rocker to life. Be careful not to overuse the black, but used in small careful stages it creates a great effect.
Then it’s on to colouring the buttons, zip and adding some extra badges before the all important finishing touches.
16. Other ideas
Ben shares some other ideas for what you’ve learned from this design.
