Bite Sized
Watch Paul make his Something Blue wedding cake in just one minute!
Highlights
Hand-picked best bits from the whole tutorial.
1. Explaining the design
To begin, Paul goes over the cake sizes and how he got to the design.
2. Wafer paper ruffles
In this lesson, Paul starts to design the bottom tier by cutting triangular shapes out of wafer paper then using the pinking shears gives them a rough fabric look. Around 300 wafer paper triangles were cut out for the bottom tier. Once all the triangles have been cut and added, Paul uses the airbrush to paint the triangles blue which brings out depth to the cake.
3. Pearls
For the design of the middle tier, Paul has taken inspiration from a wedding dress and uses pearls and flowers together to create a bodice effect on the cake. In this lesson Paul focuses on the pearls, creating a geometric pattern.
4. Blue flowers
Now that the pearls have been added, Paul adds the flowers to complete the design and once again sprays it blue with the airbrush.
5. Making top tier decorations
For the top tier, Paul decides to go gold and create a crackling effect using Magic Colours dust. He also creates sails by first scrunching up some grease proof paper and spraying it with cake release to prevent sticking. Then spraying wafer paper with a fine mist of water and delicately placing it in different shapes on greaseproof paper. When heating, the oven is left open for about 5 – 10 minutes.
Note: in the next lesson Paul decides to remove the gold cracked effect sugarpaste to make the effect stand out more before putting it back on.
6. More cracks!
In this lesson, Paul removes the top tier icing (very risky!) in an attempt to make the gold cracked effect more prominent.
7. Adding the sails
Paul adds the beautiful blue sails to complete the cake.
8. Other Ideas
Some other ideas for the cake.
9. Pro Lesson
Everything a pro needs to know about pricing and distribution.

Paul I think the blue comes through beautifully and the gold sure complements it. Good work!
Hi, could you use royal icing to glue the flowing wafer decoration on the edge of the cake. Thanks
Yes, that would work well and give a more sturdy finish. Just be careful to ensure a neat finish.
Love this design – very 2020
What product did PAUL use to make the cracklings effect ? He was talking about a chocolate paste in a pot ! Thanks
Hello Love2bake, Sorry I forgot to find out the name of this new product, Martin at Magic colours has just sent me a link….http://magiccolours.in/Sparkle-Melts-_p_22.html
There called Sparkle melts
Sorry, you had to ask, I’ll have this updated in the morning on the website.

Good morning, sir,
I would like to know how the supports are laid so that the cake does not collapse during transport.
Thank you for your answer
Hello in lesson 3 there’s a link on how to dowel and stack a double barrel cake, I wouldn’t attach the top tier until you arrive at the venue.
Thanks Paul
Thank you very much
