Watch Paul make this Topiary Rose Flowerpot cake in just one minute!
Highlights
Here, we’ve carefully selected the key parts from the entire tutorial and condensed it into a 10 min long video. More than enough to get you started without taking up too much of your time.
1. Stacking, carving and ganaching the cake
Paul stacks 5” round cakes to a height of 5.5”, then cuts a hole through the centre for the dowel. He stacks, carves then ganaches the cake to get the plant pot shape.
2. Making the stand
This is a very simple structure as Paul turns to his trusted drill and hot glue gun. He then makes the dowel food safe, before adding the cake to the stand and covering the top in ganache.
NOTE: Ensure that you cut the ganache holes out of the centre, before placing on the stand.
3. Covering the cake
Paul mixes brown and red sugarpaste together to get a lovely, earthy, terracotta colour. The cake is a little awkward to cover given the bigger diameter at the top, but Paul talks you through it every step of the way.
4. Adding the stem
This is all very straightforward. Paul rolls out strips of sugarpaste, then adds to the stem of the cake. Watch the start of the next lesson to see Paul’s little twist!
5. Covering the sphere
We’re getting ready to add the flowers now, but they need something to stick to. Paul covers the dummy sphere and places it on a stand, making it easier to add the decorations.
6. Making the roses
Here comes the repetitive, but decorative bit. Paul makes the first rose to camera then watches Netflix (or CakeFlix!) as he makes the rest!
7. Adding the rose topiary
Paul now prepares the stand using a home-made washer and some glue, before carrying out the tricky task of adding the topiary. Paul then adds more roses and comes back to show you how to add that all important final rose!
8. Adding the leaves
Paul pre-made lots of different sized leaves using plunger cutters so it’s now time to add them to the cake. Just by adding that little bit of colour, this is where the topiary really comes to life.
9. Covering the board and adding decoration
Nearly finished as Paul covers the board, adds the ribbon and the love heart centrepiece.
10. finishing touches
Paul finishes off by adding some crumbled chocolate cake to give the soil effect in the pot.
11. Other Ideas
Paul shares some other ideas you can try out during this project. We’re sure you’ve some of your own, and we’d love to see what brilliant alterations you’ve made.
12. Pro Lesson
Paul shares some insider information about the cost to make this cake. He also shares his advice on pricing and other vital information necessary for any professional cake designer.
