Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Base tier recipe!
I am making a wedding cake in a couple of weeks and they have asked for my Victoria sponge (which is light and fluffy!) for all 3 tiers. I think the top two tiers will be ok as sponge but I’m looking for a sturdier cake for the base but it needs to be either vanilla sponge or a chocolate cake. This is my first professional cake and its pauls white chocolate shard cake so has to be built as its made and transported 40 mins away to venue so i dont think that a victoria sponge would hold the dowells. I’m worried as I’m not transporting it. Does anyone have any ideas on recipes for sturdier base cake that will hold the dowells please?

Hi spohielouise
This http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/10860/easy-vanilla-cake is a lovey recipe sturdy enough for stacking and carving but not as dense as a madeira. Other members on site have baked it and given positive feed back. I’ve used it lots of times. All the Jane Hornby recipes are reliable and delicious. Hope this helps.
That’s fantastic I believe it’s the same one you gave me for the basque cake which I’m making tomorrow! Thank you so much for always helping! It’s very much appreciated. X
