yes, you can use candy melts or normal chocolate, but sometimes a little trex needs to be added, to thin down the chocolate

Copha or solid shortening sets better

I’d just keep adding a teaspoon at a time, depending on how much chocolate you start out with, until you get a nice smooth chocolate, that coats the cake well, without dragging the cake off the stick, which can happen with too thick choc.
