Coloured rice paper

Hi,

Paul mentions in the Angel cake video that you can get red rice paper, anyone any idea where you can get it from and any other striking colours? I’ve seen pastel pink, blue, lemon and green but no vivid colours. I’ve tried dusting the rice paper, but it’s a bit patchy (and laborious!!). I know you can spray it, but surely only sparingly as it would go soggy I would have thought. Thanks

Hi
I’ve seen it airbrushed, but as you say, it can only be done lightly, but maybe if you want a deeper shade, then letting it dry between a couple of coats would work ok.

Thanks Sharon54, I don’t have an airbrush kit unfortunately, I think I’ll drop a message to Paul and see if he actually bought it red or whether he airbrushed it. Thanks again!

Hi
You could use the edible PME spray cans, just the same 🙂

Yes, thanks sharon54, that’s the reply I’ve just got back after messaging Paul. I must have misheard what he said on the video, he referred to pink rice paper not red. There’s an opening there for someone to start making it in striking colours as well as pastels!

Hi Loobianca

I tried to get some too and couldn’t find any. What I don’t understand is how we can get vibrant coloured rice paper butterflies and other decorations but not the sheets. There must be a supplier out there. I’ll have an ask around at the NEC and see what there is.

Hi MIWL, no you’re right, I can’t think they spray individual sheets before they cut out the butterflies etc. It would surely be too expensive for them. An excellent idea about asking at the NEC, fingers crossed you find something out! In the meantime I’ll have a look on ebay and message anyone who is selling rice paper cut out decorations in the hope that they make them themselves and see if I can find out anything.
Women on a mission – not easy to dismiss lol!

WELL SAID GIRL!! I really could do with some bright sheets for the dino cake which I’m doing for Nov 24. Another thing we can’t seem to get in this country is dry ice. I was going to make a smoking volcano to go with the dino. If you have any thoughts how to create a smoking volcano I sure would be grateful for some advice. I’ll tweek Paul’s ear as well. G’d luck with your mission.

Hi Madeitwithlove, I have seen a tuft of cotton wool used as the smoke from a train…lol…

Hi Jgibb

Thank you for your suggestion, that was good of you. This dino party is for a 13 year old girl and she wants an all singing all dancing volcano. I’ve seen dry ice used for this purpose but can’t find a supplier. Her mum will probably have to put sparklers in (or dynamite!) if I can’t come up with the demanded good.

Hi loobianca

Had a good sweep of the show for vibrant rice paper sheets with no luck. The Dr Oetker people have shown interest in the lack of brighter shades and have said they will get their development crew on to it. Here’s hoping but don’t hold your breath! Any luck with your enquiries?

Hi MIWL

Well thanks for having a good look around, it doesn’t look too promising does it, still, you never know, maybe Dr Oetker may come up with something! I’ve had no luck so far, still waiting to hear back from one seller on ebay who is contacting his supplier. I think basically no-one makes it. I wonder how much it costs to set up a manufacturing plant . . . . . (maybe not lol!). I’ll let you know if the ebay chap ever gets back to me!

Thank you for trying loobianca, same goes for me, if I have some luck I’ll post as well. I suspect there are overseas manufacturers some where but I don’t feel comfortable using dubious supplies.
