Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Confectioner’s glaze
I bought some confectioner’s glaze to use on a cake I’m making next week but now I’ve seen the warnings on the bottle and googled it it’s put me off! Is it okay to use on the actual cake or should I just keep it for decorations that are unlikely to be eaten? I’m assuming that it is used for things like wine bottle cakes in which case it does actually get eaten? Thanks!

Hi Doodlecake
Confectioner’s glaze is an edible product and is used in sweet making as well in many other foods to give them a shine. If you type into the search box ‘confectionary glaze’ you’ll see my answer to another member. There are lots of things in the food industry which, if we knew where it came from, we just would not eat. If you’re not happy with using it and you want a glaze, you could use egg white substitute or a thin glaze made up with boiled water and icing sugar which can be painted on in small amounts. x
Thanks miwl, I wasn’t hugely bothered where it came from but it didn’t seem right to be putting something that smelt like nail varnish remover on my lovely cake! In the end, I just used it on certain bits. It mostly seemed to soak in and wasn’t that shiny though. Do you normally put a few coats on?
On another note, can you please wear a badge or something to identify yourself at the NEC so we can all track you down to say thanks in person for all the time and effort you put into helping on this Q&A!! x
Hi Doodlecake
I have to agree with you about the glaze, I wouldn’t fancy putting it on any of my cakes either! My hubby the scientist, gives me all this information, sometimes I’d rather just not know. I’m sure your cake looked just fabulous.
As for the NEC, if you see a little old lady who looks like Mrs Overall from the sit com Acorn Antiques, you’ll have found me!!!! See you there, I’m soooOOO excited! I hope there will be lots of us from our site.
Well I’m going on Sunday, as for Mrs Overall, well I’d imagined you as a Nigella lookalike ! LOL
Sx
Ha ha ha Sharon, you are so kind, perhaps a hundred years ago! Hubby and I are going for the three days, we’re taking the caravan, Derby and Joan on a winter break in exotic Birmingham!!! Seriously though, I can’t wait. I’m booked in with Paul for the handbag demonstration. I made the bag in June, it turned out quite well considering it was me doing it. I’m trying my hand on a couple of other things too, for the life of me can’t remember what they are but hubby will have the details. x
