Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Cup Cake Portioning
Hi there, I’m on my third ice cream scoop and still can’t find one that fits perfectly the size of cup cake foil cases. Any ideas as I’ve got an order for 200 coming up and I need to get them pretty much the exact size.
The three I’ve got are too large, which is a shame as they were expensive, so need to go down some sizes but it’s proving an expensive way of making mistakes so thought I’d ask you guys in case you have found the perfect gizmo:-)
Thanks in advance!

I personally have never used an ice-cream scoop for cupcake mixtures, but I have sometimes just filled a large piping bag with the mixture and filled the cupcake cases that way, you can get an ideal size cupcake and pretty much the same amount of mixture in each case, it also keeps the cupcake cases very clean as there should be no excess mixture on the sides of the cases. Don’t know if that’s any good to you. But it worked for me especially when I did wee tiny mini cupcakes.
Hi there,
I bought a relatively inexpensive ice cream scoop from the Range, the one with the squeezy sides if you know what I mean. I find one scoop in a muffin case is adequate – they never overflow, and they rise up nicely when baking.
I looked at dearer ones online and in shops, but they did seem to have a bigger capacity. I got the idea for this from the MacMillan Coffee Morning adverts on TV – perfect for portion control!
Hope this helps,
David
I use the Pampered Chef one, largest size, perfect every time!
Thanks for these answers, my husband bought me a 49ml Ice cream scoop from Lakeland this week as he felt sure it was what I wanted!!…so I’ll have a go with that and let you know how I get on…otherwise a piping bag or one from the Range it is!
