Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Design ideas – help
Help. I really need some inspiration. I’m a hobbyist cake person and doing a favour for a friend, wedding cake. They would like 3 tiers with a cacscade of flowers, it’s a Muslim/Indian wedding so a pretty traditional style cake but the colour scheme of the wedding is navy and plum
Any ideas how to combine the 2 colours and what size cake should I ideally do for the tiers. The top tier I’m going to use a dummy
Any ideas welcome

Hi ctennant
Here you’ll find Lindy Smith’s Eastern Ornament design, it’s the burgandy and gold cake with the jewel topper. It has a few ideas which could be played around with. The design incorporates paisley shapes and peacocks which are all very significant in Indian culture. x
Hello thanks for the swift reply. I’ve got Linda’s book. To be honest they only want a cascade of flowers but its the 2 colours I’m worried out its how to combine them as they are both such strong colours. I’ve got a great interior design book called colour inspiration with thousands of colour pallets but the navy and plum don’t go. How do I combine these two colours?
Also can I have your advise am I better doing a 12″, 10″ and an 8″ or smaller.
Actually maditwithlove scrap that. I’ve just gone to the blue and the purple is an analogous colour so it will go but still need ideas on how,to combine to get a good effect without being overpowering
hi as soon as I read you message I remembered I’d recently seen this http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/34244 and http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/26947 .Similar colouring that can be adapted to the cascade . I love the combo never thought it could look like this lol
Hi ctennant
I’ve had a look at many plum and navy cake images in google, as you quite rightly say the two don’t work very well. They would work though on a light background, ivory iced cakes, very wide navy ribbons around the cakes and cascading plum flowers something like the square cakes here http://idoinspiration.blogspot.co.uk/2009/12/table-top-tuesday-dark-blue-burgundy.html. In her online shop, Fiona Cairns has the most amazing Indian inspired ribbons in any array of colours, this is her link http://www.fionacairns.com/indian-ribbons. Perhaps embellishing the rim of the flowers with gold might also help break down the strength of colour. I’m sorry I can’t help more. When I think of Indian or Asian weddings I visualise very rich ornate colours, and find just two colours quite unusual, making a difficult task for you. The size of cakes would depend on how many guest are to be served You have the correct traditional combination, which goes up in 2 inches for a balanced look, if you want to add a fourth tier it would be 6″. I’m sure other members will help out with better ideas, good luck. x
