fondant flowers

Hi there,

I have been trying to make flowers using regular fondant (not handmade flowers-just simple flowers using a flower cutter) but once i roll the ball shaped tool on it the fondant starts to fall apart.

Is this because im using fondant rather than gumpaste? does it have to be gumpaste? Also, the ball shape tool im using is platic, does it have to be the metal one?

Many thanks

Hello Allthingspretty

Plain fondant with no added strengthener is much softer and doesn’t perform in the same way as gum paste. You can frill fondant with a little pressure if you the leave the flowers to dry off for a few minutes so that the fondant is not so fresh and soft. They still won’t be the same as gum paste flowers as they tend to be too soft and break. Gum paste can be rolled out very thin, it is much more elastic than fondant and can easily be frilled with the ball tool and dry off harder. A plastic ball tool is just fine, it doesn’t have to be a metal one.
