Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Fondarific – Is it worth the extra money?
Fondarific – Is it worth the extra money?
Has anyone used this? Paul used it in a blog and I would love to know if anyone’s used it and how they got on with it and what the tastes like.
Its very expensive but paul says it doesn’t crack and is easy to use makes me wonder if it would be good for covering my first wedding cake.
Im thinking of the wedding white buttercream one.

Hi jb
I haven’t used this product but I know from the comments on the blog that it’ s expensive. Have a look at www.bakenbuy these people are the official UK suppliers and had a stand at the cake decorating show in London. Might be worth giving them a call or email and ask if they could provide you with a couple of samples. This product is new here, not in the States. There are many reviews on the internet about the flavours, how it handles and how to store. Apparently (don’t know how true) this product, unlike normal fondant, can be refrigerated. If you can’t get samples it may pay you to get a small tub to try.
Hi jb1958
I haven’t used this either, but i have tasted a small piece of Pauls that he had in the sugarcraft school. It was a lot more pleasant in flavour that sugarpaste. It is hard to describe, but almost like a vanilla, marshmallow, milk chew sweets type of flavour…. haha as i said hard to describe! And it smelt delicious!
I’m going to get a small tub to try, the Satin Ice I bought at the show tastes really gorgeous and rolls out lovely too. I’ve heard from various people that Fondarific must be kept cool other wise it begins to crack. I’m waiting to hear from a friend in the US, she uses it but has never commented on it’s quality. From Paula’s description of the taste, Fondarific sounds Terrific!
Well bought a small tub to try hoping that it was easy as some people said with the thought of hopefully using it for my first wedding cake.
Glad I didn’t buy a big tub.
Heres what happened
Had to cut it with a knife which wasn’t easy as it was really hard. Microwaved for 10 secs as instructed and it kneaded well. Then rolled out using a little icing sugar and didn’t find it very easy. Dont quite know how to explain it but just didn’t seem to roll smoothly.
Eventually put it on a dummy cake and tried to smooth. The smoother I tried to get it the worse it got. Perhaps it was because it was getting too warm? Got to the stage I felt I was using buttercream (although slightly firmer).
I then gave up as the dummy cake was starting to look like the surface of the moon!
I bought buttercream wedding white and although it tasted nice I hated the colour which was very cream almost yellowy. I think I was expecting it to be very white.
It could be me as I am quite new to cake decorating but am definately going to stick with covapaste.
Would love to know if anyone else has tried it and how others (more experienced) get on.

I haven’t got around to buying some yet, but my friend in the States says it’s nothing to get excited about. I’d still like to try it out of curiosity, probably get some in November at the cake show. Did you by any chance contact the main agent for samples?
Thanks for posting your opinions, saves the mistake of buying loads of it.
I ordered a small tub online as there were a couple of other bits I needed.
This morning it looks awful!! Im sure it must be something i was doing wrong as it cant be that bad. Still have some left so might try covering something else and perhaps not heating it for so long (might try 5 secs).
Hello
I ordered fondarific and it cost me over £30. I’m not brilliant at covering cakes and thought this would makemlifemeasier for me but I didn’t find it any easier to work with and it stretched. Maybe I was doing something wrong but I didn’t really find any benefit to using it formthenincreased cost
