football fruit cake?

Hi again I have been asked to decorate a fruit cake in a foot ball design, they don’t want filling, buttercream or ganache in the cake only fondant and marzipan is there any way to do this with a 2 tier fruit cake? I thought about using a very thick piece of marzipan 1st trying to smooth it round the cake instead of ganache? any help please x

It would be much better to use some boiled apricot jam. If the jam has bits of fruit just sieve it through first so it’s nice and smooth. Use vodka on the marzipan to adhere the fondant. Hope it all goes well. x

Hi amy21simm

Covering a fruit cake with marzipan and then fondant is the correct way of getting a smooth surface. Some people prefer not to have the marzipan, in which case a thin first layer works in the same way. I’m not sure how a ball cake stacks but I should imagine you would need a central dowel to give the tiers stability. Try googling ‘how to stack a ball cake’. Sorry can’t help more, I’m sure other members will advise better.
