Horizontal lines on glossy buttercream cake
Hi, I was wondering is there an easy way or special comb like tool for making the horizontal lines on the sides of a buttercream cake other than using a palette knife. Also how would you make the buttercream glossy? thanks

Hi yummymummy02
The pattern is made using patterened side scrappers. I’ve popped a link for all different types for you to look at and choose what you like here:

I’m not really sure what is meant by making buttercream glossy. I make Italian meriginue buttercream which has a very fine quality and is lovely for masking cakes, making flowers and swirls. Here’s another which might be of interest:
Hope suggestions help. 🙂
Thank you, just purchased a cake contour comb. The glossy buttercream has a shine on it, I think it is either swiss merringue or else they’ve sprayed something on it
I’ve been looking at the ‘glossy’ buttercream and it appears it is a based meringue BC made with the whitestest of butter available. In the UK that would probably be Lurpak. I guess once the buttercream has set, it could be sprayed with PME clear glaze. I’ve never used this product on buttercream so I don’t really know whether it will actually give that glossy look or whether it would just absorb back into the buttercream. Perhaps have a little experiment? If you do, feed back would be great! 🙂
Does Italian meringue buttercream hold up well in heat?
Thank you

I find it does but as with any buttercream it will soften in excess heat. Keep it as cool as you can. Same goes for Swiss meringue.
