Icing board

Hi
Can anyone tell me how to get a chequered flag effect to ice a cake drum. Would rolling black squares into white sugar paste work or would it stretch the squares to look like rectangles lol. Thought it might be nice for a tyre cake which I’m making.

Hi nigek-mellon

I think it would be better give the board a thinner than usual layer of icing and then cut out the squares with a square cutter. Both the white and the black icing should be rolled out to the same thickness. Using fondant/marzipan spacers will help achieve an even depth. Attach alternating squares onto the board with a little water or sugar glue, butting the squares evenly. Leave to dry before placing on the tyre cake. Doing it this way will give a sharper finish than if you roll black squares onto white icing. There are many chequered flag images in google which will help with how to alternate the two colours.
