Matching dress lace onto cake

Hi All
I’ve been asked by my bride to match the lace pattern in her dress around the tiers of her cake, I know this can be done, but I’m stumbling as all moulds I’ve found are not quite right! How would you suggest I achieve this? Should I freehand pipe it on or is there some amazing way I should know about?

Hi DawnW

I made my own moulds using silicone plastique.
If you go to youtube and search ‘how to make a lace mould’ you’ll see the video showing in great detail how to achieve your own mould. One tip I can give is that you don’t need the special stuff which is painted on the lace to stop the silicone from sticking to it. I used PVA glue which is non toxic. You’ll need to paint the glue onto the original lace and let it dry. Then paint another layer ensuring it goes into every detail of the lace. Let it dry overnight. The lace will have stiffened which lends itself better for making the mould. I suggest you try this with some spare lace before using the real stuff.
If you don’t have silicone plastique you can make moulds from pastillage or from gumpaste. The lace will have to be stiffened as above and the an impression made on the pastillage/gumpaste. Once dry use the mould to make the lace. Generously dab the sugar moulds with cornflour so the lace paste doesn’t stick to it.
Finally, if you don’t want to use either method you can use the actual lace to adorn the cake. Wash the lace first in a gentle liquid before attaching to cake with a small dot of royal icing.
I have to say I’m very impressed that you can freehand pipe lace design!! It does look very lovely, much more delicate than made from sugarpaste/gumpaste.
Good luck with your project!
