Pauls ribbon insertion cake

I’ve just watched this tutorial what a lovely cake will certainly attempt one day.In the meantime can anyone advise me how they would do this top tier with wired hand made flowers.e.g. would you make a sugar paste cone where Paul used oasis and would this be on a board or glued to the cake.Any help would be appreciated as I’m slightly stressing over a wedding cake.Thank you

Hello joeanna1

Wired flowers can be placed in a ball of fondant or in posy picks. It depends if you want them individually wired or wired together. If you want to stick them into fondant, cut the stems off so they don’t go down as far as the cake.
Flowers can also be wired together to form a central stem which can be trimmed down and placed into a posy pick. A central stem can become quite bulky, however when all the flowers are tapped together some of the wires can be trimmed short so reducing the bulk before placing into the posy pick. Paul shows how to trim excess wires from one flower in this tutorial http://www.cakeflix.com/vintage-pearl-cake-lesson-13-the-peony-flower
You will need to fast forward the video to get to the trimming stage. The clematis wedding cake and the poinsettia flower tutorials both show how to wire several flowers and leaves together.
Another way would be to use a plastic wedding bouquet holder which has a central pick. Basically it’s like a giant posy pick with a bowl large enough to hold dry flower oasis into which wired flowers can be placed. They can be bought in local florist supplies outlets or online I wouldn’t insert the holder directly into cake without first covering it up in several layers of cling film.
