Piping Gel Query

Hello
I’m using piping gel to achieve a pond/water feature – this is my first time using it. Last night, I made the pond from blue fondant and then painted a small amount of blue coloured piping gel over the top. This morning, the piping gel is still very sticky and wet and the fondant is still soft.

Should I have allowed the fondant to dry first? Any tips on how to get a lovely shiny watery look which sets dry?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Anna,

I don’t think piping gel ever really “dries” as such … at best, it just kind of goes a bit sticky or tacky (certainly when I’ve used it!).
I’d usually let the sugarpaste dry / set a bit first before brushing on the gel.
Hope this helps. 🙂

Ive never used piping gel,i like the result from using a little white in blue fondant for water, almost like a marble effect…maybe not the effect you are looking for, but I find it dead easy 🙂 hope this helps x

The only time piping gel has dried for me is when I’ve used small dots as dew on flowers. It does eventually form a rubbery crust however with large amounts never dries completely. I do like the effect and have used it for making water on a pond cake.

Thank you all for your replies. It didn’t cross my mind that it wouldn’t ‘dry’ fully! Slightly puts me off using it, although I will try smaller amounts to see how that goes.

loufairy I think I will do the marbled water effect instead -this is for a golf themed cake and I don’t feel entirely happy with a moist patch on top of the cake! Thanks for the advice.
