how do you judge what size cake tin for quantities of people, thanks

It depends on how many people you want to serve and the type of cake you are baking. A rich fruit cake for instance would normally be served in finger size portions and will go a lot further than a sponge. It would take too long for me to write down each tin size and it’s yield here, but you can get this information in any good cake baking and decorating book. You can also google in cake tin size and yield and it’ll throw up what you’re looking for. Hope I’ve helped a little.
